From the Introduction
The roster of non-commissioned of the 10th U.S. cavalry is a rare and unique historical document
relating to one of the army's most outstanding regiments during the Indian Wars. It contains a wealth of information
about the Tenth Cavalry and the enlisted men who contributed to its fine record. Although the exact origin of the booklet
is unknown, there can be little doubt that the motivation for it came from the rank and file. It is clearly their account,
a chronicle of the regiment's first thirty years as seen through their deeds and sacrifices. They were proud of their
accomplishments - and rightfully so.
The year 1897 was significant to the men of the Tenth United States Cavalry. It was a milestone that marked their regiment's
first thirty years of service, all of which had been on the western frontier. The Tenth was one of four regiments in the
Regular Army whose ranks were comprised entirely of black men, except for the officers. During these three decades the
"Buffalo Soldiers," as they were respectfully dubbed by their Indian adversaries, compiled an impressive record of service
from the plains of Kansas and the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) to the harsh deserts of Texas and Arizona. Even though their
potential for being effective soldiers had been questioned, initially, in army circles, their courage, stamina, and devotion to duty were
proven repeatedly in relentless campaigns against the Cheyenne, Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache. As the Indian campaigns drew
to a close, the Tenth was transferred to Montana where they enjoyed a well earned rest until the Spanish-American War.
One has only to glance down the troop rosters to see that a number of the non-coms had served with the regiment for many years,
a few of them for the entire period. Some had prior service in other black regiments and two had even been in the Civil War.
The army was the only home known to many of these men, but age and the rigorous service of the coming war would force many of
the old-timers onto the retirement rolls. The Roster served as a keepsake to remind them of their comrades, the marches,
and the campaigns of days gone by.
