    Description

    OVERVIEW:
You are buying 1 (one) vintage original cream / ivory Stiffel cone bell lamp shade that is in very good condition.  Thank you for looking and buying.
This beautiful textured / "nubby" linen Stiffel lampshade has a cone bell shape with small vertical ribs. Stiffel used a textured linen, so you will notice random nubs around the shade that show very nicely when the bulb in on. It is original and is stamped STIFFEL on the center support brass washer that attaches the lamp shade to a lamp.  It has narrow gold braiding around the top and narrow gold braiding around the bottom.
This genuine Stiffel lamp shade is approximately 11 inches tall with a top diameter of about  10 inches and a bottom diameter of about  16 inches. The depth from the top of the lamp shade down to the center brass support washer is about 1/2 inch.
You can see in the photographs the very good condition of this lamp shade. I have provided multiple photos of this Stiffel lampshade rotated around at different viewpoints -- including interior photos in the daytime with both a lamp light bulb turned on and with a lamp light turned off.  The lamp shade lining is still strong and fully intact with no sign of any thermal over-heating or cracking.
I never sell Stiffel lamp shades with odors, and I check them with my aging nose. However, I cannot guarantee that shades come from either smoke-free or pet-free households. I collect Stiffel lamps and lampshades across the greater Los Angeles, California area, and most often they have been passed down from older generations. If I find Stiffel lamps or lamp shades that are not in very good condition, I simply do not acquire them.
If you already own a beautiful Stiffel brass lamp and need a special, original replacement lamp shade, then this could be the one to buy. If you need another size, please check my other listings.
(Note that any vintage brass lamp shown and/or light bulbs pictured are NOT included -- When used in my photos, these lamps and bulbs are only for illustration purposes and are not part of the product offering.)
    SIZE:
This genuine Stiffel lamp shade is approximately 11 inches tall with a top diameter of about  10 inches and a bottom diameter of about  16 inches. The depth from the top of the lamp shade down to the center brass support washer is about 1/2 inches.
    WEIGHT:
This Stiffel lamp shade weighs approximately 2 pounds. The shipping box and packing materials will usually add about two pounds.
Shipping costs of lamp shade-only packages are higher than you might expect, since lamp shades are relatively lightweight. The 16 inch bottom diameter of this cone bell shaped lamp shade will determine the required shipping box size of at least 16 by 16 by 16. Shipping companies do not want to waste their valuable shipping volume capacity by shipping lightweight, low revenue boxes. Therefore, when light-weight packages exceed roughly one cubic foot in volume, a different and more expensive "dimensional billing" billing schedule is applied, and you pay much higher shipping fees for these larger, lighter packages. For example, UPS Ground will bill a lighter 4 pound (16" x 16" x 16") package effectively like a smaller, heavier 25 pound package.
    CONDITION:
Please review the photos very carefully. The photos are part of the product description. I supply numerous, clear, and unaltered photographs of the actual lamp shade for sale. These are taken from various angles providing views of the full lamp shade from all sides.
You should have reasonable expectations about buying a used, vintage or antique lamp shade. This antique lamp is sold "AS IS." As stated above, the exterior and interior are in very good condition. The center brass mounting ring that is stamped Stiffel and the three brass support wires of the lamp are known as the washer and spider fitter. This lamp shade's washer and spider fitter are solid and have some patina consistent with the estimated age of the lamp shade.
This antique Stiffel cone lamp shade is designed like a typical Stiffel drum barrel lampshade, which means that the lamp shade has an internal structure of stiff plastic between the upper and lower internal metal rings. The inside of this lamp shade looks good without deterioration, overheating, or discoloration. The exterior of the lamp shade looks very well preserved without any water stains. You may notice that I have used both the terms "linen" and "silk" related to a lamp shade, because I do not know whether the exterior ivory / white lamp shade surface is made of linen or silk. If the exterior lamp shade surface is vertically textured, which it is more likely made of linen than silk. Either way, it is in very good condition and looks beautiful.
    QUESTIONS:
Please ask any and all questions, before you purchase.
This is a product that you can use for many years, and I want you to be satisfied. While you might never become as enamored of Stiffel lamps and lamp shades, as I have become, I do want you to be happy with your purchase.
    PURCHASING:
Payment is through eBay' normal payment procedures.
Prompt payment is very much appreciated. I begin our shipping process, after payment has been processed.
State sales taxes will be automatically added for California residents.
Sorry, no international orders. I will only ship to the 50 United States. (Please do not ask me to export. The hassle and costs are just not worth the effort.)
    SHIPPING:
I intend to ship all orders within 3 (three) business days of payment. I pack carefully and may ship via FedEx, UPS, or the USPS.
Shipping prices for this listing are generated by an eBay shipping calculator for the 50 United States. Shipping fees cover both product shipment and packaging materials.
Note that the further away you are from Pasadena, California -- the higher the shipping cost, and shipping Stiffel lamps or Stiffel lamp shades can be costly. I normally select FedEx, FedEx SmartPost, or USPS Parcel Post as the economy shipper. For lighter lamp shade-only packages, shippers' "dimensional" shipping charges can be much higher than you might expect. Note also that it is the lamp shade's largest dimension (plus two or three inches for packing materials and boxing) that largely determines the dimensional shipping size and cost.
When I ship Stiffel lamp shades, I  pack carefully and reinforce the packaging either with double boxing and/or interior supports.
Vintage products have already been waiting decades to make it to your home, and slower ground shipping can be much cheaper. eBay calculated economy shippers generally are the lowest cost, but they are slower as a result, compared to the more expensive, expedited services.
For lighter lamp shade-only packages, I usually select Fedex SmartPost and/or USPS Parcel Post. For Fedex SmartPost to be low cost, you should note that FedEx uses their own interstate distribution network first, and then near the final destination, FedEx hands off the package to the USPS and the US Post Office makes the residential delivery.

    ABOUT VINTAGE STIFFEL LAMPS:
I am quite familiar with vintage Stiffel [pronounced "St(eye)(ful)"] lamps and lamp shades , and I have directly studied a very wide variety of them in my own collection, on line, and in thrift shops and antique stores. (My wife patiently tolerates my obsession with these durable, high quality lamps.)
Founded in the Great Depression, the original Stiffel Company soon became the premier high-end U.S. lamp and lamp shade manufacturer. Sadly, it went out of business in Chicago in 2000. (After that, some Stiffel branded lamps were manufactured in China and imported to the US, but quality standards declined. In 2013, a New Jersey company obtained the rights to the Stiffel brand name and began US manufacturing of brass table lamps and floor lamps with premium prices, renewed designs, and high quality standards similar to the business strategy of the original Stiffel firm in Chicago. Note that through all these transitions after the 2000 bankruptcy, the original lamp molds have been lost, so vintage Stiffel lamps and lamp shades and newly manufactured Stiffel lamps and lamp shades may be similar, but are not the same.)
All vintage Stiffel table and floor lamps were designed with a central internal pipe that screws into or is embedded into the base and supports the lamp overall. On most Stiffel lamp models, slightly unscrewing the top by twisting the harp base counter-clockwise (when viewed from above) just under the lamp socket will loosen the lamp overall. The body of the lamp is composed of a column of stacked metal sections around the central, structural pipe. This can be useful if there are a few blemishes on some of the sections, since those blemishes might be rotated toward the back of the lamp and out of sight, if you loosen and then re-tighten the lamp.
Stiffel lamp shades for table lamps and many floor lamps typically are fixed to the lamp with a brass finial. These lamp shade finials normally have a thread size of 1/4-27. Some older lamps have a larger 1/8 IPS finial thread size, but converters can be purchased so that you can use a finial with the more common 1/4-27 finial threading. Lamp threads are a confusing topic, so online research is helpful. These standards are a legacy of natural gas lighting fixtures within homes that were later converted to electrical wiring once electricity become common.
Vintage Stiffel lamps are not "solid brass," as some people claim. Others have inappropriately called them bronze lamps or gold table lamps. Instead, the sections of these metal lamps have a molded zinc core which is the primary body and weight of the lamp. This molded and polished core is then heavily plated with nickel followed by a heavy plating of polished brass. Numerous grinding and polishing steps were involved during manufacturing to develop a bright, polished brass lamp. Then, special lacquer coatings were applied generously. This is why, when properly cared for, vintage Stiffel "brass" lamps have served owners for many decades. Many of these lamps remain in very good condition and have been passed down through generations within families. Stiffel Company lamps were high quality American manufacturing products that were built to last.
Do not believe any claims that you can simply "polish" a vintage Stiffel lamp. You cannot. I have personal experience with attempts to renovate vintage Stiffel lamps in very poor condition. Attempts to remove blemishes mechanically with polishing wheels or chemically with Brasso or other tarnish agents lead to exposure of the bright polished brass underlying the lacquered patina. Once you start the process, most often, there is no logical stopping point short of stripping the lacquer and patina entirely from the lamp. If removal is done carefully and properly over many hours, you might end up with a very functional and beautiful bright polished brass lamp. However, the lamp's vintage character will be gone. If this renovation process is not done carefully, it is also possible to strip away too much of the heavy brass plating exposing the nickel below. Also, pitting of the metal caused by poor care and exposure over decades simply cannot be repaired easily or cost-effectively. Abused lamps with pitted metal are basket cases that cannot be fully restored without grinding, polishing, electroplating, and lacquering.
