Description
Authentic replica of the Type II 1874 Canteen Cover used by the US Army in the west in the late 1870s. The very first of the Army’s “double cover canteens”, this cover set represents the Army’s attempt to recondition Civil War surplus canteens with the addition of a brown duck canvas outer cover that slips over a full covered canteen with sling attached. The leather welt sewn into the bottom of the canvas was a strengthening device to discourage the bottom sling swivel from wearing through the canvas. My set comes complete with one jean wool inner cover and one complete brown duck outer cover with the leather sewn into the bottom seam. Canteen, cork stopper and spout ring and sling/buckle are not included!
All you will need to do after adding the jean cloth cover to your canteen is slip the finished canvas cover over the top, with your sling already installed, and whip stitch the top shut.
Canteen shown for example of installation but NOT included with this cover set.
A truly unique and essential piece for the late 1870s into the early 1880s, this paired with the twisted loop spout ring (available separately—see my other auctions) will yield you a uniquely Indian Wars authentic replica.
