    Description

Scarce early original vintage photograph shows a wounded sailor being offered a cigarette from an RAF rescue personnel.
HMS Manchester was a Town-class light cruiser built for the Royal Navy in the late 1930s, one of three ships in the Gloucester subclass.
In August 1942 Manchester returned to the Mediterranean and took part in Operation Pedestal. The operation, designed to supply the besieged island of Malta, cost several warships including the aircraft carrier Eagle. In the early hours of 13 August during the operation Manchester was torpedoed and severely damaged by two Italian motor torpedo boats MS 16 and MS 22 and subsequently scuttled by her own crew with explosive charges. She was the largest warship sunk by motor torpedo boats during the Second World War.
Photograph measures 8 x 10 inches and is in excellent condition with no bends, tears, or creases and is very sharp and has strong tones with good contrast and clarity.
